What is the difference between DRM and HLS?

DRM Content:

  • DRM content is a protect content.
  • DRM content can be accessed only if you have the correct decryption key.
  • DRM content distriputed in chunks in fMP4 format and needs some treatment to be usable by video players.
  • DRM contents distreputed according to DASH-IOP protocol using XML as media descriptor.

HLS Stream:

  • HLS is distreputed in MP4 or TS format that can be played directly by video players.
  • HLS content distriputed over Transport Stream protocol using HTTP in m3u8 format.
  • HLS is not encrypted (in general).
